Violent Crimes: Charges and Consequences

December 3, 2018

What Crimes Are Considered Violent?

The category of violent crimes includes several sub-categories. These are comprised of crimes that involve the use of threat or force upon the victim and are separated by the intent, wherein the violence is the objective or a means to an end.

The most common violent crimes are:

  • Domestic violence
  • Rape or sexual assault
  • Aggravated assault or battery
  • Animal cruelty
  • Arson
  • Burglary
  • Vehicular homicide
  • Manslaughter
  • Murder

If I am Arrested for a Violent Crime, What Are the Charges?

The majority of violent crimes are considered felonies, apart from battery, assault and domestic battery. Misdemeanors typically involve up to one year in jail, while felonies involve one or more years in jail, and up to life in prison for the most severe crimes. Along with jail time, both misdemeanors and felonies involve fines upon sentencing. Each crime is unique and requires a meticulous investigation before the defining charges are determined. Criminal history also determines the severity of the sentence.
