Does Getting a DUI Mean I Lose My License?

November 20, 2018

There are several possible consequences regarding your license if you get a DUI. It is imperative that you seek legal counsel as quickly as possible so you have a fighting chance. The laws and consequences of DUI vary from state to state, so representation from a Peoria criminal defense lawyer who knows Illinois laws critical.

For drivers over 21 years of age, DUI consequences can include:

  • Minimum of 1 year suspended license
  • Vehicle registration suspension
  • Minimum 1 year of jail time
  • Fines up to $2,500
  • Possible community service
  • Possible ignition interlock device

For drivers under age 21, the consequences can include:

  • Loss of driving privileges for a minimum of 2 years
  • Community service
  • Up to 12 months of jail time
  • Fines up to $2,500

Depending on the severity of your crime and the proceedings of the trial, you may be eligible for a restricted driving permit. This would allow you to drive during certain hours and to and from specified destinations.

What Factors Determine My Penalties?

There are several factors that determine the extent of your punishment, including your blood alcohol content at the time of arrest, your age at the time of arrest and whether your actions caused an accident or bodily injury. The number of DUI arrests you have incurred is also a factor, as the more you have on your record, the harsher the judgements and more extensive the consequences.
